Indeed a painless upgrade. Steps were:
Backup Database
Download version 2.3
Extract and overwrite existing directory
Access upgrade page to upgrade database
And that was it...
This means that I now have access to tag posts and show those in the sidebar. Since I use Windows Live Writer I picked up the wlwmanifest.xml from here which worked out nicely. I have to mention that in WLW one set tags in a field called Keywords which seems a bit strange to me.
